Ever since a young age I have played with and imagined a life for my Barbie doll in a very guilty way. I envied her because I was too young. She had breasts, she was anyone in the world without even working hard for it and was a general b-e-atch when it came to things. She was soon thrown away with her identical sisters.
I grew up and then something diabolical happened; the fixed point in time, The Twilight Saga. I will admit I read the books at an average pace of a Twihard and did enjoy them, but they lacked depth for me. I will always be Team Merman / Team Poseidon. Percy Jackson also being a light teen read but I wish he didn’t make the gods sound so fudging lame! Poseidon kicks butt I know but come on, a hippie fisherman? He should be a pirate in swashbuckling 18th century brocade coats with huge sleeves and descend and override the limits of time and fashion!!!
I digress, the inner pirate came out of me. I apologize; she does that sometimes.
But the vampires were cool. Although the sparkling thing made me piss my knickers in Boots the other day because I found a Breaking Dawn Sparkle Body Spray ‘pour Homme’ next to the Lynx! I needed to be resurrected from the epic giggle fit of doom many times. Twas a good day my friends. However, naming no names, the vampire portrayed was not what I wanted. I wanted him REALLY burning with desire for her blood; to the point where he’d just nibble on her ear because he couldn’t resist. I wanted Meyers vampires to be extremely tortured souls, not extremely vague and extremely vogue.
However. There is one good thing from this undead chaos. Gothic stuff has become fashionable. I will use the term ‘Gothic’ to mean anything lacy, black, purple, red, dark pink, pearl strewn, gem studded, sweeping, elegant, mysterious and corseted. Long gone are days for me of A-line skirts, ASDA jumpers and blue denim jeans!
Rejoice Darklings! We are being understood.
And back to my original point, Barbie. I now, at the age of 16, feel like I’m ready to play with her again. But I look upon her still with jealous eyes; all the pink and horrid puff and fluff that feeds the fantasies of naive little girls will always rot and horrify them. And any girl going to prom will know that going to it in a bright pink puffball drenched in glitter and butterflies will not attract a mate and will make you the focus of humiliation.
Rejoice again my Darklings, we have been saved. For all those little goth girls who never really grew up but are fully functional and anatomically correct, there is a new breed of doll. No, not Bratz. They’re too whiny. Plain, boring, ordinary and blender worthy. I am talking about Monster High.
Now I know some of you will be rolling your eyes right now and some will be bouncing with joy. I like them. I am, inspired by them. And to be honest, it’s good that little girls can now be alternative. There’s no pressure to like pink or want to go horse riding or be a vet. Frankie Stein and Co, are genuine teens. There are a few American dramatizations I as a Brit don’t get or dig, but they are an actual representation of 16-18 year olds. We often feel like monsters, we often turn into them with our awful hormones. Sometimes we feel so ugly and feel like the stitching of our lives are just snapping away. And then we feel awesome. We feel like we could own the world in one day! As an artist I feel these ghoulish girls are perfect representations of us. We’re pretty in our own fiendish ways and we’re gorgeously wrong sometimes. Like Frankie I feel I could rip apart at any moment and I’m similar in the way Ghoulia feels; intelligent but highly misunderstood.
And with that said, thank god for the Internet because I can now buy one of the dolls without being asked if it’s for my little cousin. Amen.

So- those Vampire Mystixx dolls... (a review of sorts)
First of all, they seem really expensive except that you get two outfits, two wigs, two pairs of shoes (anyone know if they fit) and essentially- two different dolls (cause they faces have distinctly different personalities).
But- they just aren’t terribly attractive. The vampires faces are a little too pointy.
Is it bad that I want this one for its green wig alone? Though the boots and clothes may be workable with the MH girls. I kind of like the school girl-ish look on the normal one, though the boots kinda detract from that. Some mary-janes would have been better.
And this one- I like the spacy dress, and the black wig. (I like the blue one too, the my vampire CAM NEEDS the black wig like burning). But should I really be spending $25 on a doll I don’t really want? Again, it seems like they were trying for school girl but the lace and Barbarella boots are killing it. They’d look better on Judy Jetson-meets-Twilight over there, anyhoo. Why is she wearing her grandmas slippers?
This one- I’m sure Spectra would do the purple outfit justice, but the gold one? Blegh blegh blegh. lol. I would make use of those wigs, though. The shoes on the gold are cute, the ones on the purple- um, Draculaura much?
And finally there is this chicky. I don;t even know with those clothes. Draculaura would have to do a serious Molly-Ringwald-Pretty-in-Pink overhaul on that monstrosity of a frock to render it wearable. I love me the sweetness of Gothic Loli, but this is like, saccharine . But I can work with the top and capris on the normal girl.
Essentially, if I were rolling in dough (and could find them anywhere), I MIGHT pick these up and recycle. There is so much potential here but it looks like they were lazy with the design. (I hear they recycled the doll line/names, too). The artwork on the box is Bratz-ish, and the clothes actually look cute in it but somehow when they made the clothes they felt compelled to add sparkles and lace and make them too gross for words.
Srsly… look: 
The pink wig? The Abbey boots on the turquoise one? The desert safari tan ensemb? I dig those… But in doll form? Not working.
Ok, thats been my two cents. Now back to your regularly scheduled Monster High addiction program.

Finally got a shelf for my office, so I can display my Monster High dolls
Only, 9 of them are CAMs… and I gave away a few of my stands already. So… I have no way to set them up :[
They sit up pretty well on the edge of things, so you could put your girls on stands in the back and the CAMs in the front!
Yea, I could do that. I was thinking of making like a bench so they could line up. But with a box or something they were all sitting and I could see RIGHT UP THEIR DRESSES. lol. It was disconcerting.
lol- but on the edge of the shelf they should be ok.
