My all time favorite monster!! I’m totally making an OC of him when I get home :3A day devoted to monsters is a great excuse to feature one of our all-time favourite cartoon monsters: Gossamer, the big red hairy monster with a heart-shaped face, long claws, and tennis shoes. Gossamer was created by animator Chuck Jones and introduced in a 1946 Warner Bros. Merrie Melodies cartoon entitled Hair-Raising Hare.
The scene you see here is from a 1952 Looney Tunes cartoon entitled Water, Water Every Hare. In order to distract Gossamer from pursuing him, Bugs Bunny thinks fast and pretends to be a beautician, giving the surprisingly patient Gossamer a pretty awesome makeover:
“My stars! Where did you ever get that awful hairdo? It doesn’t become you at all. Here, for goodness’ sake, let me fix it up. Look how stringy and messy it is. What a shame! Such an interesting monster, too. My stars, if an interesting monster can’t have an interesting hairdo, then I don’t know what things are coming to. In my business, you meet so many interesting people. Bobby pins, please. But the most interesting ones are the monsters. Oh, dear, that’ll never stay. We’ll just have to have a permanent.”
Watch it here. (We’ll be watching it too.)
