So, is this barbie? When I was kid, I used to use barbie as the reflection of my self in ten years later. I imagined my self in good dresses, talk politely, act gently, smart, have a really nice career and confident. So, what do the kids think of this little creepy bones?

Perhaps, it is not aimed to sell to kids but unluckily, I found it in a kid’s toys store. Well, I might have never been as awesome as the kids these days. PROBABLY.

Monster High is generally based of multiple different types of monsters and themes. The theme of monster high is generally “be unique, be yourself”

Skelita is based off the spanish holiday Dia de Muertos/Dia de los muertos. http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%C3%ADa_de_Muertos The day of the dead where people celebrate their ancestors, and make offerings to the deceased. It is in fact aimed at kids, since the toy line itself is aimed at older girls(preteens). She was actually designed by a Hispanic artist.

If you look up Dia de Muertos, you’ll often find skeletons. Sugar Skulls are a treat made for the holiday. Skelita is actually based off of La Calavera Catrina. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Calavera_Catrina

These images above are crafts based of La Catrina, and sugar skulls.

Also, if you’re wondering about some of the touches like Skelita’s skirt. It’s actually based off of a type of decoration. Papel Picado Banners. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papel_picado

They’re used in different holidays and celebrations in Mexico. If you’re in the United states and ever have a chance to go into a Hispanic grocery store, you may actually see some hanging up. North Gate Market usually have some depicting their logo. For my father-in-law’s birthday, they had a banner of them hanging up. Think of them like how kids like to make paper snowflakes during Christmas time.

So actually, for any child who’s been raised around Dia De Muertos, Skelita isn’t scary at all. She’s a really nice nod to Hispanic heritage and a nice way to celebrate Mexico into the monster high universe without creating a typical Mexican caricature that we often get. I imagine a few little Mexican girls back when we were little would have loved to have a Skelita of their own.

sincerely,

a Monster High Fan.

ps. I highly recommend watching the episode of the monster high series featuring her. It gives a look into her family history, and is also another nod to the importance of family in Hispanic culture.

I love when well informed people reply to things in a calm and well articulated manner. :)
