And as we had a shitty family issue this week it was a little tense at first.. but yeah anyway, got to do a bit of doll hunting at my old TRU and Kmart and Target, and had some decent luck finding things but was loathe to spend any money as my banks website was down and I couldn’t log on to see my balance, so I just avoided buying any u_u
So today my aunt came by my moms, and her and my mom were showing off their current quilting or sewing projects, as crafty-ness is big in our family. Since I had no sew craftys to show off, I showed her my custom BooLu and progress on my Kali. I explained the reroot process and how I made the clothes out of things like socks, and boil perming (which apparently- THEY used to do with THEIR Barbies back in the sixties! :D)
She asked me to explain a couple things, and then wanted to see what the doll looked like before (I talk too fast, sometimes, and skip steps or sentences, lol) and when I showed her the DDG Spectra she was like "ITS SO CUTE! These are the dolls? What are they? Monster High? THEY’RE SO CUTE!” (and when she sees something she genuinely likes her voice goes up several octaves so she literally is like speaking in squee and its adorable ^_^)
Now, I was hesitant to show her the dolls at ALL, as she’s very religious (or has gotten moreso as she’s gotten older) But… I showed her my kids dolls and the OG characters and the pic posted recently of Catty and Wydowna (which she LOVED) and she just kept repeating how adorable they were and then wanted to see the pic of Boo Lu and kept going back and forth from the pic of my doll to the art. Like, studying it, and then pointed out what I did right and how it compared to another custom (none of your guys…lol) and was just really impressed. As this woman is a craft goddess (I’ve never seen anything she’s done that’s less than perfect) omg it was so so validating (I guess??) to have her appreciate something I did.
Finally I browsed through and showed her face ups and other customs and she was all twitterpated at the amount of work on such tiny little dolls.
Srsly, this (and my friend coming to visit and telling me to “own my doll obsession and the creativity that comes with it and just be proud of it) was the highlight of my weekend and made for an amazing NSS
That, and her and my mom having a “They’re cute!” “No, they’re not” “yes they are!” “No, they’re creepy!” “No, they’re pretty!" argument over dolls XD
