I noticed this thing about dolls. It’s the eyes. Have you ever noticed recent dolls have had a habit of making the eyes go off to the side. It’s very odd I think but it occurred to me that it’s probably being done for a reason.
I don’t think dolls were ever unpopular but for a long while they fell out and were a subject of childrens fears. Often dolls were listed among the dark, clowns and monsters.
There’s something frightening about dolls that stare directly at you, like they’re peering inside of you. I’ve never realized how frightening it truly is. But the side-eyes are non-threatening. They’re not directly looking at you but off to the side and they’re not so scary anymore. Disney has totally taken the side-eyes over in their recent dolls. Even the Monster High dolls who are looking forward, seem to be almost disassociated. If you look them in the eyes they’re not really looking directly at you the way a Barbie doll is. I feel like the side-eyed dolls probably sell better than the straight-forward looking ones. I’d almost like to do a study.
Interesting. I, personally, do not trust side eyes. Why can’t they look you in the eye? What are they hiding??
